Alternatives to high-calorie holiday fare aid in digestion, overall health

While most people like to indulge a little during the holiday season, favorite holiday foods can often be major contributors to health problems. In fact, most reports say the average holiday dinner can exceed 2,000 calories, and that’s just one meal.

Some alternatives to calorie-dense foods this holiday season might include fresh salads, fresh fruit and yogurt. And for those holiday guests who might be vegetarians, some popular foods include tofu turkeys, raw pies and rice bread, according to the Beacon News. Uncooked fresh fruits and vegetables contain natural enzymes that assist the body with digestion. Blueberries, apples and melons also contain high levels of antioxidants.

Yogurt, which can be served alone or as an ingredient in some desserts, contains beneficial bacteria that can help keep the colon healthy. In fact, some yogurt companies are promoting the use of probiotics, or “friendly bacteria,” in some of their products.

Of course, it’s likely that the traditional, high-calorie fare will make it on most people’s holiday menus this season. To help with those foods, digestive enzyme supplements are formulated to ease the burden on the digestive system. In addition, digestive enzymes’ contribution to complete digestion helps the body get more nutrition out of food.
